Process-stable production of solid solution strengthened cast iron using ladle metallurgy

The aim of this ZIM-funded research project is the development and production of a process-stable solid solution strengthened cast iron by ladle metallurgy. In order to realize the goals of this research project, the influence of different alloying elements on the microstructure and mechanical properties of solution-hardened ductile cast iron is analyzed by producing casting alloys with different proportions of potential alloying elements, mainly nickel and cobalt. Based on the correlation between different alloy contents as well as process conditions and mechanical properties, a suitable alloy composition can be recommended that not only fulfills the desired unique combination of better tensile strength and ductility, but also the requirements for economy and process stability. The project is carried out in close cooperation with an industrial partner
